Vendor Spotlight: Flowers Annette Gomez
Annette Gomez has been in the flower business since she was 16 years old. That’s over 30 years, for those so inclined to do the math! She believes in personalizing weddings so that brides and grooms can see their dream visions come to light. And it is perhaps that dedication that accounts for the 30 to 50 weddings she is able to successfully create arrangements for every single year.
Accomplishing that personal touch takes work, though. Annette talks to her clients and asks a lot of questions in order to fully understand what it is they are looking for. She attempts to tap into their personality or “vibe” to get at the root of their vision. This ability can come in incredibly handy in a creative pursuit like floral design, especially for brides and grooms who have only a basic idea of what they want, but haven’t quite been able to create that full vision for themselves just yet.
Though, the industry has certainly changed in that way – with most couples having a better idea today what they are looking for than ever before. Years ago, Annette explained, a couple might come into a consultation with a few imagines from a magazine and a vague idea of what they wanted. Perhaps they would have a specific color scheme in mind, or one favorite flower they hoped to include, but not much else. Today though, with Pinterest and the Internet, more and more brides are showing up with portfolios of pictures and printouts to pore over. And Annette is right there, ready and willing to help them bring all those varying concepts and ideas together into one set vision.
In her business, Annette is flexible with scheduling. She says she has helped to create floral designs for weddings of up to 250 people in just a few weeks, while she has worked with other clients for over a year on their unique design visions. If she has the availability, she will find a way to help you, regardless of the time crunch. Though, of course, it is always advisable to plan as far ahead in advance as you can.
I asked Annette what it was she loves most about her job, and she explained that it all comes down to dreaming up that design. She loves that stage of taking the ideas couples bring to her and conceptualizing how it should all come together. She also loves going to the market early in the morning, before anyone else is there, and shopping for the freshest cut blooms.
This is a woman who knows, and loves, her flowers!
Her favorite arrangements tend to vary based on what is in season. She loves textures and colors, but explains that she also adores white and green. Then, with a laugh, she adds, “Okay! I love everything!”
Annette adores nature, loves digging in the dirt, and gets most of her inspiration from outside. When I asked if there was anything else she wanted to add for her spotlight, she said simply, “I can’t imagine doing anything else.” It seems that she is one of the lucky ones to have found her true calling.
