What Are You Waiting For?
What Are You Waiting For?
Most of us were dreamers when we were young. We imagined these epic lives for ourselves. Lives that included travel, dream careers and saving the world in some context or another. And maybe for a while there, you were living up to those grandiose expectations. You strapped a pack on your back and spent a few weeks exploring Europe. Or you found something you were passionate about, and did what you needed to do in order to make that a career.
But you never joined the Peace Corps like you always said you would. You never took that big leap you always intended to. And your bucket list is still pretty long, filed with places to see and things to do that you no longer think are as realistic as you once did.
It happens. We get older, we fall into a different pace of life, and careers and family and kids start to get a bit in the way of that person we once were. Or the person we once always believed we would be.
It isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because some of those other adventures can be pretty exciting as well. Settling down and starting a family, or finding success in a field you love; these are life events that also come with plenty of joy. Still… it isn’t at all uncommon to wake up one day and feel like you have fallen into a rut. Maybe the life you always dreamed of isn’t exactly what you dreamed. Or perhaps you keep coming back to that bucket list, feeling a sense of sadness or grief over the fact that you haven’t given it the attention it deserves over the last few years.
Well… what are you waiting for?
For the record, settling down and living a different life doesn’t necessarily mean automatically falling into a rut. But if you are in one, feeling a bit bored and unchallenged by your life, you know it. The beauty is, you don’t have to stay stuck there. We all have the power to pull ourselves out of those places and to reestablish a bit of adventure and excitement; should that be something you actually want.
So take a look at that bucket list and start asking yourself what is feasible for this point in your life. Don’t make the mistake of telling yourself that you will be in a better position to pursue those adventure in a few years, or of being overly practical when it comes to trying to find a way to shake your life up. Sometimes, some of the best decisions we will ever make are made on a whim – following our true heart’s desire, rather than that voice in our heads that tells us we can’t or shouldn’t.
Now is the time to travel. It is the time to move. Now is when you should be embracing that passion of yours and looking for ways to turn it into a career. And there is no better day than today to join a group of like-minded people in pursuing a little adventure, or to find ways to create some of that adventure for yourself.
It may be a bit cliché to say, but life truly is too short. You only get so many chances to fulfill your own dreams, and if you let those opportunities pass you by – getting out of that rut only becomes all the more difficult. So instead, embrace your sense of adventure and be willing to take a leap.
The time is now. What are you waiting for?
