Pictures from “Yes!” to “I Do!”
It used to be that professional photographers were reserved solely for the big day, while your mom’s old point and shoot camera would accompany you for all the events leading up to the wedding. Lately, however, there seems to be a shift.
More and more brides and grooms are recognizing the importance of preserving those memories which occur on the way to the aisle, not just the moments walking down it.
We’ve all likely noticed a rise in big engagement productions over the last few years. With the advent of YouTube, everyone seems to want to make a spectacle of themselves on the day they propose, proving their love through sheer planning and determination. The best of those videos get posted online and quickly go viral, everyone flocking to a good old fashioned love story. I’ll admit, I’ve grown misty-eyed myself over some of those proposal videos. But as a photographer who talks to people every day about weddings and proposals – I can promise you that if it’s right, the big production isn’t necessary to get the person you love to say “yes!”
The production may not be necessary, but that doesn’t mean I’m not. Some of my favorite photographs lately have been captured in the emotional excitement and surprise of an engagement. Men are starting to realize the value of planting a photographer just out of sight, and I love the opportunity to get those images when he gets down on one knee and she gasps at the realization of what is going on. Even for the most laid-back of proposals, most soon-to-be brides are through the moon to find out their fiancé had the forethought to get me there. Those are images that allow them to remember one of the happiest moments of their lives; moments that otherwise would have gone by in a blur of adrenaline and love.
The professional photos don’t have to stop there though. There are so many events from the proposal to the wedding day that are photo worthy.
If I could have my way, I would follow every couple I work with throughout the duration of their wedding planning.
Blending in as just one of the girls for dress fitting photos, having me there means your mom and friends are freed up to actually help you in and out of all those gowns. Meanwhile, you get keepsakes of both your favorite dresses, and those that were hilariously wrong. Then comes your shower, where surely you would love images of all the women you care about most gathering in your honor. Wedding rehearsals are often overlooked for photographs, but can produce photographs that are more casual and fun with your wedding party by your side. Even hiring a photographer to join your respective bachelor and bachelorette parties out for the first few hours can lead to pictures you won’t soon want to forget.
It doesn’t just have to be about the wedding. Having images from all those events leading up to the exchange of “I do’s” can help you to remember not just your big day, but also all the excitement which preceded that day. Guys can start it off by hiring someone to wait in the wings when they get down on one knee. Trust me when I say that you will both be so overcome with emotion during those seconds, you won’t remember much of what actually happens. Having the pictures can help, and they are images which will serve as a reminder of your love story years down the line.
From there, if you’re up for it, I would love to stalk you for all the rest as well.
