Jennifer Dery on Love
I am one of those girls who just loves hearing other people’s love stories.
It’s one of the many reasons I enjoy wedding photography I suppose. Doing what I do allows me to be surrounded by love every single day, and I am always excited to hear the little stories that lead a couple down the aisle. The first time they met, their first kiss, and the day one of them decided to drop down on one knee. It is all just a part of their history, and I always feel so blessed to be the one documenting their present.
Since I so regularly get to hear all of your love stories, I figured it was high time I start sharing a few of my own as part of the “Getting to Know Your Photographer” series. Because who doesn’t want to hear about my first kiss and the current man by my side? This is exciting stuff people!
So about that first kiss… I was in 7th grade and it happened in front of my house. Like most junior high relationships, it wasn’t necessarily something we had orchestrated ourselves. It was more like all our friends had decided we were “going together”, and we just acted accordingly as a result. For about a week, we were very chatty – lots of phone calls and pretending to eat lunch together; the kind of romance the relationships of 12 year olds are made of. Then just like that, it was over. Needless to say, he was not the love of my life.
From there, I had a lot of crushes. Too many to count or remember if I’m being honest, but it definitely started with musicians. Then the summer before my 9th grade year came my first real puppy love. He was three years older than me and we had one of those play at the beach, kiss in the wave’s type of relationships. It was an innocent few months of fun. I remember he would write me poems. Back then, I never thought about what came next… and them he broke up with me before heading back to school. I was devastated.
Today though, I have a different love in my life. I met Ryan a few years ago at a craft beer festival. He was the friend of a friend I just hadn’t met before. We had actually missed crossing paths only a few months prior to that official first meeting. Really, the timing was perfect. Had we met when we were originally supposed to, we both would have been occupied with other things. The difference of just a few months meant that we were each in the position to get to know each other when those introductions were finally made.
That beer festival was September 9th (yesterday was the anniversary) and we will have been together for two years this October. He is just this incredibly sweet, considerate, thoughtful and generous guy. He also doesn’t have a big ego to go with all that amazingness – which earns him big points in my book. Our first date, we went to a yoga class together and then out for pizza and beer. It was perfect as far as I was concerned, and we have been pretty much inseparable ever since. We each have a passion for travel and have been around the world together. Kauai, Baja, Italy, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Peru – I’ve seen them all with him by my side. We always have fun planning our upcoming trips as well, and I think we are both looking forward to Thailand and Costa Rica next, maybe Greece too. I love that we get to share those adventures together, and can’t wait for the ones we still have ahead of us.
