Getting in Shape for the Big Wedding Day
Getting in Shape for the Big Wedding Day
In all my years of photographing weddings, I have yet to ever meet a bride (or groom for that matter) who doesn’t want to look her best for her big day. I mean, of course she does! This is supposed to be one of the happiest days in her life, and she is going to be surrounded by friends and loved ones who have all gathered around to help celebrate this special time – what woman wouldn’t want to look her very best on an occasion such as that?
For a lot of women, however, that goal often goes beyond just having the perfect hair and makeup. They want the dream dress, and they yearn for the dream body to pair with that dress. Often that means yearning for a size they may have been several years before, or just hoping to get more toned in order to show off sexy arms and shoulders in their strapless dress.
The good news is, there is no better motivator than a wedding to get in shape. The bad news is, it still takes work. And commitment. Some time. And a willingness to make some overall lifestyle changes.
But let’s be real – that’s probably a good thing for everyone!
So when it comes to brides hoping to get in shape for their big day, my big advice is always to start 3 to 6 months in advance. Sure, depending on your goals, you can probably pull off some good (unhealthy) results sooner than that – but if you really want to be at your best, you need to give yourself the time to get there!
Some of you may not realize it, but I am also a fitness & nutrition consultant. It’s my hobby, and I really take a lot of pride in being strong, fit and healthy. I have helped brides achieve some amazing results when they set their minds to it – walking down that aisle and shocking even their closest friends and family with how great they look! If you think about it, photography & fitness are the perfect match. I help people look their best and show their best for their photos. Its a great combo!
It starts with selecting a proven exercise and diet plan that is both feasible and maintainable though. We have different challenges and programs that can help you to achieve that goal, and I am always available to talk to anyone who may have questions or be looking for extra support, but the number one thing you have to remember is to get moving in a well-thought-out way and to be mindful of what you put in your mouth.
There are plenty of healthy food options and recipes that also taste amazing, and we are lucky to live in San Diego – where fresh produce and locally grown products are always available. My big thing is to choose quality food options over processed junk. If you want a burger, fine, have a burger! But get that burger someplace that specializes in high quality, hormone-free meats, that uses organic, locally grown products, and that values taste and flavor over convenience.
Because believe it or not, eating healthy doesn’t have to mean giving up on flavor. Just the opposite, in fact – I’ve found that whole foods diets often consist of flavors so much more bold and delicious than anything you could find at a local fast food chain. It does take a little time for your taste buds to adjust to the lack of chemicals & sugar in your food though, so be patient!
Then, of course, there is the exercise – a concept a lot of people seem to dread, when really, they should be embracing it! Working out doesn’t have to be a painful concept. Find something you love and stick to it, whether that means joining one of my challenges or hiking, biking, surfing. Whatever you will stick with. Being active isn’t just about getting in shape, it is also about boosting those endorphins and being the best possible version of yourself! And again, we live in San Diego – which means the options for getting outdoors and getting active really are limitless.
The main key, in my mind, is making healthy lifestyle changes and then sticking to them. If you need extra support, I am always here to help – but the first step is deciding you are ready to make those changes.
And then working together to get you in the best shape of your life for that big day!
